A special weekend to provide an opportunity for our church and
community to give what we can for those who are suffering in south-east
Asia was held here on 5th/6th February 2005.
A number of members from Buckhurst Hill Baptist Church will be joining a team going to Sri Lanka with ‘Smile International’ in August.
By the end of June, the final total raised was
£11,142. This has been forwarded
to ‘Smile’
(www.smileinternational.org), and a "thank-you" letter
has been received. It is likely that the money raised will be earmarked
for a specific project in Sri Lanka.
By the end of the day on
Sunday 6th Feb, more than £10,000 has been raised by the weekend's
activities (see below). A big "Thank You" to everyone who has
contributed. This money will be forwarded to the Christian organisation
‘Smile’ (www.smileinternational.org) for specific work in Sri Lanka.
‘Smile’ already has close links with our church and has been at the heart
of bringing humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka, helping to build new homes
for many homeless families. A Centre is being established in Sri Lanka
which will provide counselling, education, job creation and medical care,
as well as providing shelter for orphaned children. Ministry teams
are currently being set up to be sent out to Sri Lanka in order to work
with children and families.
