BUCKHURST HILL BAPTIST CHURCH - An Introduction

Baptist worship on our site, beside Palmerston Road, actually began in 1900, using the old church hall. The entire site and buildings were purchased in June 1908 by the London Baptist Property Board.

The original structures were erected in 1871 by the fellowship known as “Kings Place Independent Church” led by the Revd. William Dorling, and sold after he retired. (Among the churches in Victorian Buckhurst Hill, a Baptist fellowship had been established in Queens Road. It later moved to other premises, eventually closing, many of the members joined the Palmerston Road Baptists).

We, however, date the establishment of B.H.B.C. from over 100 years ago. At a gathering in the church hall, Baptist sources tell us, the church was “organised” on 7th October 1909.

A list of 18 “Foundation Members” includes Edward Hurditch the first minister, his wife and members of local families such as Gingell  and Munday.

We have worshipped as a Baptist fellowship on the same site over the 90 years, we have, however, had to replace the original buildings. Structural problems and the need for improved premises with better disabled access – led us to replace all the old buildings in four phases from 1966 to 1996, creating a suite of rooms and structures through which the work of the church could be continued and enhanced.
